Cowboys Announce Final Roster Cuts: Now Have 53

Tonight the Dallas Cowboys announced their final roster cuts to reach the required 53 players. We now have the 2012 version of the Cowboys.

Here are the players cut today:

OL Jeff Adams

LB Baraka Atkins

DT Ben Bass

WR Tim Benford

NT Robert Callaway

QB Rudy Carpenter

WR Danny Coale

RB Lance Dunbar

FB Shaun Shapas

DT Clifton Geathers

OL Harland Gunn

WR Saalim Hakim

LB Adrian Hamilton

OL Ronald Leary

LB Orie Lemon

OL Daniel Loper (waived/injured)

OL Pat McQuistan

RB Jamize Olawale

CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah

CB Lionel Smith

TE Andrew Szczerba

CB Teddy Williams

S Eddie Whitley

Biggest Surprises:

Surprise Cuts: For me, Orie Lemon, Danny Coale, Lance Dunbar, Jamize Olawale and Adrian Hamilton. Thought these guys had a pretty decent chance to make the roster. Didn’t expect them all to make it but thought at least a couple would anyway.

Let’s hope they clear waivers and land on the Cowboys practice squad. Also like to see Tim Benford, Ben Bass and  Shaun Chapas kept on the squad as well.

Surprise roster keeps:

QB Stephen Mcgee- Dallas decided to keep 3 QBs on the roster. Speculation was they might only keep 2 QBs (Romo and Orton) leaving McGee to be cut. But they went with 3 QBs like they typically do.

S Matt Johnson– The fourth round small school pick was hampered with hamstring injuries the entire preseason and played very little. Don’t know how they are sure he is a roster keeper. I’m glad for him but just saying we don’t know if he can play safety in the NFL or not as this point.

S Silva Mana– Glad to see the “Hawaiian Punch” make the roster. Knew it would be close but thought he earned it.

UPDATE 9/1/12: McGee cut. Add TE and Center.

  1. Like I said before, I’m sure some of these were tough choices…am surprised & disappointed that they cut Coale, Olawale, Lemon & Dunbar. Now Coale has only hadlimited opportunity to show anything yet but Olawale & Dunbar both performed well as RBs–plus Lemon looked like he could be a contributor as a LB on Ryan’s defense. Maybe some of these guyswill land on the Cowboys’ practice squad but some of themcould end up on other teams. As far as the competition between McGee & Carpenter,I’m really not that surprised they chose McGee–since the coaching staff has worked with him longer and they probably see more upside with him. I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised that they would want to see more from Matt Johnson (and Safety is still a position that could use upgrading)–but I think AOA has struck out 3 times now andneeded to go. Sonow we knowthe 53 they will go to war with…still concerned about the o-line, especially since these guys haven’t played toegether that long–and don’t feel good about the idea of Romo probably having to play the Giants without his favorite “receiver”. Phillips & Hanna both look like they can contribute but can’t replace the timing & comfort level between Romo & Witten. Plus Austin has missed most or all of the preseason games–so I wonder how in sync he’ll be with Romo. But I’m getting excited to see Ryan’s defense this season–after a full offseason, with D-Ware back andnew players @ key positions (Carr & Claiborne @ CB, Church @ Safetyand Carter @ ILB). If Romo & the offense can continue to play & scorelike they have been (while keepingthe turnovers to a minimum) andRyan’s defense getting more turnovers & keeping the scoring down, this season should be a wild ride… ________________________________
