With the 16th pick, Dallas passes on the 2012 Heisman Trophy winning home boy from Texas, and make a very safe pick in offensive lineman Zack Martin. Cowboys fans appeared ready to celebrate a pick of Johnny Manziel aka “Johnny Football” but instead they get another offensive linemen in the first round. Dallas now has three 1st rounders on their offensive line in Frederick, Smith, and now Martin. During their super bowl years with a dominant line, they didn’t have guys selected that high on the line at all.
Martin– While not a “sexy pick” Martin has been a very dependable offensive linemen at Notre Dame with a history of not missing any games due to injury. Described as dependable, respected, and smart. He does have alligator arms and therefore figures to move from tackle to guard in the NFL. Dallas certainly needs help at guard and I look for Martin to start there right away beside center Frederick. Down the road, perhaps he replaces Free at right tackle.
This feels a lot like taking center Frederick in the first round last year. A solid pick in Martin and now Dallas has one of the better offensive lines in the NFL for sure. Still a lot of work to be done on the defensive line on day 2.
My Final Take: You can find offensive linemen with short arms in the 2nd or 3rd rounds all day long but there is only ONE Johnny Football. If Dallas plays against the Browns some day, he will destroy their defense. Jerry may regret this decision one day.
